Baroque Sonata by Edward Fuqua

Well, I had a nice honor. I was asked by a professional colleague and a friend to review a manuscript for a book he wrote. Ed is also a young adult librarian and like me has an interest in fantasy and gothik tales. I was a little nervous because I have done it twice before and had to find a diplomatic way to praise them, but I really liked this one.

His story centers around Tempest Donner, a redhead with a talent for the flute. She has the first seat in a small orchestra. One evening, she is walking home from work and decides to stop in Finnegan's, a local bar where she meets a mysterious man with a beautiful flute that appears to be made of mother of pearl. He lets her try it. Then, he offers a chance to win it if they duel. Fear not, it is nothing too dangerous ... it is dueling flutes. Unfortunately, she loses the bet and finds out she loses her musical abilities in the process.

She is so depressed by the loss that she heads out and just walks and travels by bus. After a short run in with a pair of vampires. Before she knows it, she is alternate universe where minotaurs, werewolves and changelings, vampires, sidhe, and other fantastical creatures. Before she knows, Tempest is drawn into the unique politics of the various groups. She meets a number of fun and friendly characters like a gay minotaur cook, a nice loving wereraven, a sidhe with a mysterious paste, and some other fun patrons at the diner she gets a job at.

The action moves nicely, and there is a bit of mysterious intrigue going on. The writing really draws the reader in quickly. Tempest is really an interesting character, and you really can't help feeling for her on her Dorothy-in-Oz-type journey. I can really see the book being published. It just has some editing to be done on some basic proofreading level. There are few points where things seem a bit off, but overall it is a great story. I wish him the best of luck with it.

'review a manuscript ' that's work if you are doing it for a colleague and friend--it's hard to read a book under those circumstances for fun.
Oh, shoot, guess I'm back to picking on AJ again![LOL][KISS]

[LOL] I was thinking that she sort of fit my image of what the main character looked like. I usually post a book cover, but because this was a manuscript, there was no book art to use.

See, I knew you'd be a better judge of this type of fiction than I! Honestly I think with a little editing, this could get published and it's just as good as a lot of stuff we've all read lately![SMILE]

I definitely agree. It definitely needs a little bit of proofreading, and there are a few points where the writing is a little awkward, but the story and the characters are really interesting. A good editor could make this a perfect book with an interested audience.
